Which animals might I see on my South African safari?
It was once the case that only a few lucky travellers had the opportunity to go on a safari but now it is accessible for many more people who want the chance to see the magnificent African safari animals. It is even possible now to travel on safari by boat, on foot or even by hot air balloon.
The so called Big 5 that is lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant are the animals that everyone wants to see when they go on a safari but there are many more African animals to see such as vibrant and unusual birds and butterflies. The common ostrich is an amazing sight and although flightless it stands at an impressive eight feet tall and weighs more than 300 pounds. It can often be seen sprinting across the plains at more than forty miles per hour. Herds of wildebeest moving as one with zebra and gazelle looking for fresh grazing spots are just as astonishing and a more common sight than the Big 5.
One of the larger animals that you may be fortunate enough to spot if you are visiting an area close to water is the wonderful hippopotamus but beware they have a reputation for being rather bad tempered so do not get too close.
