The African Lion – not to be missed on safari
The African lion is the second biggest living cat (the first is the tiger) and the largest males weigh in the region of 250KG, that’s about the weight of three average men!
The lions socialise in groups of females and their offspring and a few males, the group is known as a pride. When on safari you are likely to see the lions during the day time as this is often considered the safest time to be near them as they are very docile in the daytime and tend to sleep when it’s hot. At night time the pride become much more active and this is when they do most of their hunting.
Lions in the wild only live for around 10-14 years in comparison to Lions in captivity that can live until they are 20, this is thought to be because of the injuries that they get when hunting and also when fighting to be alpha male.
These majestic beautiful cats really are the highlight of any safari holiday.
